Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for the immediate prosecution of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Mohammed Amin, for deliberately trying to cover up the death of teacher and X influencer Albert Ojwang while in police custody.

Speaking during a church service at Kagio Holy Spirit Church in Mwea constituency, Kirinyaga County, on Sunday, June 15, 2025, Gachagua said that Amin must be held accountable for what he describes as an attempt to obstruct justice and mislead the public regarding the circumstances of Ojwang’s death.

He asserted that Amin lied under oath in Parliament, claiming Ojwang died while in care at Mbagathi Hospital, despite CCTV footage showing he was already dead on arrival.

In addition, the former second in command also said that Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat, who is the complainant in Ojwang’s case, should also be prosecuted.

“The case of Ojwang, there is a cover-up; the people of IPOA, IG, DIG and DCI were put in those positions by William Ruto. Even the DCI boss lied to the parliament that Ojwang died in hospital, while the CCTV shows he was dead on arrival,” he said.

“That DCI must be prosecuted; that DIG must be prosecuted. We are appealing to the international community to step in for the people of Kenya.”

In CCTV footage obtained by a local media outlet on Saturday, June 14, 2025, a police vehicle was seen entering Mbagathi Hospital at 1:35 a.m. Three officers then emerged from the vehicle, and two of them engaged in a brief conversation before walking towards the casualty section of the health facility.

During this time, Ojwang was still at the back of the vehicle, unattended. The officers then reappeared at 1:37 am while making phone calls.

From the footage, the officers took close to 20 minutes before wheeling Ojwang into the hospital while covered in white sheets.

The officers, whose identity has not been established, then spent another 10 minutes in the casualty section after taking Ojwang to the hospital.

At 2:11 am, they wheeled out the body.
