Gachagua claims police station attack was staged

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sensationally claimed that the recent attack on a police post, where firearms were stolen during the June 25 protests, was not genuine but staged to target and frustrate leaders and youth in the Mt. Kenya region.
Speaking on Sunday, June 29, 2025, during a church service in Nyahururu, Laikipia County, Gachagua dismissed official reports about the incident, which was stated that rioters stormed and torched the police post before escaping with five guns, including two AK-47 rifles.
“Hiyo unaskia polisi ilichomwa, Kikuyu, ni uwongo. Who can attack a police station? You have nothing, you have no gun, polisi wako pale wako na bunduki,” he said.
Translation: What you’re hearing about a police station being burnt in Kikuyu is a lie. Who can attack a police station? You don’t have anything, you don’t have a gun, and the police there are armed.
Gachagua continued to question the credibility of the reports.
“Ati inawezekana ati watu wameingia polisi, ati wamechoma police station, wameenda, how?”
Translation: You mean it’s possible people entered a police station, burnt it down, and left? How?

Claims of political intimidation
The DCP Party leader said the attack was a planned move to harass the youth and intimidate his leaders.
“All those things imepangwa ndio vijana wetu waangaishwe. Ndio hawa viongozi waangaishwe.”
Translation: All those things were staged so that our youth can be harassed, and so that our leaders can be frustrated.
Calling it an insult to the community.
“And I will not allow it. Mimi sitakubali,” he declared.
Translation: I will not accept it.
Gachagua further said that top police commanders had been summoned to State House to plot actions against certain leaders.
“Ile mkutano ilikuwa jana Ikulu, polisi wote wameitwa, ili waangaishe hawa viongozi.”
Translation: The meeting that happened yesterday at State House, all police were summoned so that they can frustrate these leaders.
His remarks come just a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the recovery of one stolen rifle and launched a manhunt for suspects. Police had earlier reported that the firearms were looted during a violent protest involving over 10,000 rioters.
