Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has demanded proper investigations following the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang’, a resident of Homa Bay who died while in police custody.

In a statement on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Wanga, who promised support to Ojwang’s family, called on the government to make public the report of the investigation.

“I wish to register with profound concern about the distressing reports surrounding the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang’, a young man from Homa Bay County, while in police custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi. I want to extend my deepest condolences to family, friends, and community of Albert Ojwang’ during this unimaginably painful time. No family should suffer the loss of a loved one under such unclear and troubling circumstances, especially while in the custody of state institutions sworn to protect lives,” Wanga stated.

“I want to call upon the relevant agencies to hold thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the events leading to Albert’s death. Police brutality has no place in our society. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) must expedite its inquiry and ensure that findings are made public. This incident underscores the pressing need for police accountability and custodial safeguards. We stand in solidarity with Albert’s family and will offer necessary support during this time.”

This comes moments after police confirmed Ojwang’s death, who was arrested on Saturday, June 7, 2025, in Homa Bay and transported to Naitobi on the same day.

The National Police Service (NPS) said he sustained fatal head injuries by repeatedly striking his head against the cell wall.

“The National Police Service (NPS) has noted reports circulating on social media regarding the death of a suspect allegedly in custody at Central Police Station, Nairobi. NPS confirms that Albert Omondi Ojwang was lawfully arrested by DCI detectives for false publication and placed in custody. While in custody, the suspect sustained head injuries after hitting his head against the cell wall,” NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated.

“Police officers on duty promptly noticed the injuries and rushed him to Mbagathi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. In line with statutory requirements, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the incident.”

Migori Senator Eddy Oketch says Ojwang’s death has raised serious questions in the police force, calling for a transparent investigation into the matter.

“I find the death of Albert Ojwang not only tragic but absolutely intolerable. It is an incident that has shaken the conscience of our people and cast a dark cloud over law enforcement conduct. The circumstances surrounding Albert’s death raise deeply disturbing questions that cannot, and will not, be ignored. The police service now bears a heavy burden of accountability. I am demanding, in the strongest terms possible, a comprehensive, transparent, and evidence-backed explanation from the police—not public relations statements, but factual clarity with urgency,” Oketch stated.

“How did Albert sustain the fatal head injuries? Who was responsible? What action has been taken? The people of Migori, and indeed the Kenyan public, deserve answers not tomorrow, not later, but now. Let it be clear: unless and until such explanations are provided with seriousness, transparency, and demonstrable evidence, this death shall rightfully be presumed to be a result of police brutality. And in that case, there will be no peace. We will not allow the blood of innocent young Kenyans to be swept under the rug of impunity. Justice must be served fully, swiftly, and publicly.”
