Govt issues fresh update on Madaraka Day celebrations

With just hours to go before the much-anticipated Madaraka Day celebrations set to take place in Homa Bay County, Nyanza Regional Commissioner Flora Mworoa issued an official update regarding the preparations for the national event scheduled for Sunday, June 1, 2025.
According to Mworoa, Homa Bay is fully prepared to host this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, noting that all necessary arrangements have been finalised in anticipation of the big day.
She highlighted the major renovation works at Raila Odinga Stadium, the official venue for the celebrations, which has been upgraded to meet international standards.
The stadium now holds a capacity of 12,000 people, although the number of expected attendees is projected to exceed that figure.

To accommodate the overflow, Mworoa stated that Homa Bay Secondary School will serve as a holding area, where attendees will be able to follow the proceedings live on large screens.
“The Raila Odinga Stadium has a capacity of 12,000, and we are expecting more than that number. We have therefore identified Homa Bay Secondary School as a holding ground for those who may not be able to access the stadium. People will also see what’s happening because we have screens outside the stadium.“ Flora Mworoa said on Saturday, May 31, 2025, while addressing the media.
In terms of logistics, the regional commander revealed that a comprehensive traffic management plan has been developed to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles in and around Homa Bay Town.
“We have been able to come up with a traffic plan within Homa Bay Town just to make sure the traffic flows smoothly. We have also identified several surrounding institutions where people will be packing their vehicles.” She added.
Designated parking areas have also been identified, and a dual carriageway has been completed from Miracle Diversion to the stadium to facilitate easy movement for those attending the celebrations.
Mworoa called on all attendees to cooperate with security agencies and assured the public that sufficient security personnel have been deployed to guarantee safety and manage the crowds effectively.
“My clarion call is to request the attendees to cooperate with the security agents. We have deployed enough security officers to ensure that the crowd is controlled.” Further stated
Madaraka Day preps
The regional commanders’ update comes at a time when preparations for tomorrow’s event are in full swing. This will be the first time that Homa Bay County is hosting the celebration.

The theme of this year’s Madaraka Day is Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, which aligns with Homa Bay’s rich aquatic resources and its strategic location along the shores of Lake Victoria.
