Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has warned that Kenya is on a destructive path if police brutality against unarmed, peaceful protestors continues to be tolerated.

In a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday night, June 18, 2025, Kioni said that normalising police violence against Kenyans is steering the nation toward ruin.

In addition, Kioni added that the ongoing brutality is gradually stripping the country of its soul, as human life is increasingly treated as political currency and the suffering of others is met with silence or justification.

“The chilling normalisation of violence against ordinary Kenyans is a path straight to national ruin. We are witnessing a society gradually losing its soul, where the value of human life is traded for political convenience, and the pain of others is met with silence or justification,” Kioni warned.

He further warned those orchestrating or enabling the decay and impunity, stating that the ongoing erosion of empathy is not merely dangerous but fatal to the nation.

“This ongoing erosion of empathy is not just dangerous; it is fatal to the very idea of a just and humane nation. To those orchestrating or enabling this decay, know this: Impunity has a short lifespan. Sooner or later, the same violence you ignore or benefit from will come knocking at your own doorstep,” he added.

“What is the meaning of economic progress, roads, buildings, and budgets if they are built on broken bodies and silenced voices? We are headed down a road of no return, unless we stop, feel, and act.”

Police brutality

Kioni’s remarks come after the United Kingdom Embassy in Nairobi condemned acts of violence meted out on protestors by the police.

Demonstrators who were protesting against the murder of Albert Ojwang were faced with a forceful reaction from the police, and the UK registered their displeasure over how the law enforcers reacted.

The embassy has also demanded an open and fair investigation into the actions of the police officers.

“Police forces must command the trust & confidence of those they are duty-bound to serve & protect. We are deeply disturbed by the violence against unarmed civilians & protestors yesterday. We urge a swift, independent, and transparent investigation into the actions of the police.

“We send our best wishes for the swift recovery of those injured during yesterday’s violence,” the UK Embassy said in a statement on X on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

Apart from the UK embassy, several human rights bodies and political leaders from both divisions have also condemned the violence levelled against unarmed protesters.
