Kalonzo Musyoka, leader of the Wiper Democratic Movement, has announced the formation of the Wiper Patriotic Front, a new political movement to support Generation Z’s push for justice and good governance.

Speaking at a rally on Friday, June 6, 2025, Kalonzo urged Kenyans to register as voters to strengthen the opposition’s bid to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections. He stressed the importance of youth participation, praising Gen Z for their role in the 2024 Finance Bill protests.

Kalonzo declared June 25, 2025, as a ‘Liberation Day’ to honour Gen Z activists who died during the protests.

The former Vice President pointed to questionable financial moves by the government, accusing President Ruto of giving out KSh 3 million and Kithure Kindiki of giving KSh 2 million for women’s empowerment projects.

“Where is this money coming from?” Kalonzo asked. “It’s the people’s money, and this is corruption through the backdoor.”

He called for transparency, insisting that public funds should not be used for political gain.

“Na ni pesa ya wananchi,” he said, meaning “It’s the people’s money.”

Public holiday

Kalonzo proposed that 25 June be made a public holiday to celebrate Gen Z’s courage.

Quoting him directly: “Wangapi wanaunga mkono kwamba ili kushereheka vijana Gen Z, tarehe ishirini na tano itakuwa public holiday?” which translates to “How many support that to celebrate Gen Z youth, 25 June will be a public holiday?”

The Wiper Patriotic Front aims to unite opposition leaders and expand Wiper’s appeal beyond its Ukambani base. Kalonzo’s rebranding comes as he distances himself from the dysfunctional Azimio coalition, vowing to form a new alliance to ensure Ruto’s defeat in 2027. He called on Kenyans to join the movement, saying, “This is a liberation journey for Kenya, led by the fearless spirit of our youth.”

Kalonzo’s bold stance has sparked debate, with supporters praising his commitment to Gen Z and critics questioning the feasibility of his holiday proposal. As the 2027 elections approach, the Wiper Patriotic Front’s focus on youth and accountability could reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
