Malala says 2.8 million individuals have quit UDA since DCP unveiling

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, has claimed that approximately 2.8 million people have resigned from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) since the unveiling of DCP on May 15, 2025.
In an interview on K24 TV on May 19, 2025, Malala attributed this mass exodus to what he termed as the government’s failure to fulfil its campaign promises to ordinary Kenyans.
“Many people who have now lost faith in the UDA party are leaving. Since we announced our party, around 2.8 million people have left the UDA party. Go check at the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties,” he stated.

According to Malala, who previously served as the UDA Secretary-General, the mass resignations have prompted the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties to restrict access to the resignation system, fearing the scale of defections.
“They’ve even gone to the extent of locking that system so that no one can resign. It’s because they are beginning to see that people are leaving,” he added.
Failed promises
The former Kakamega Senator further accused UDA of failing to deliver on its economic empowerment pledge, stating that the party’s much-hyped Hustler Fund has proven inadequate, providing only minimal support that does not meet the needs of ordinary Kenyans.
“UDA had promised people that they would be able to walk into banks, get loans, and start businesses. But instead, what we got is the Hustler Fund, where you can borrow as little as Ksh500,” Malala explained
He questioned whether such a small amount could truly make a difference, asking, “Honestly, can five hundred shillings help someone start a business? Can five hundred shillings lift someone from the bottom upward? “
National appeal
Malala also dismissed recent criticism, labelling DCP as a tribal outfit, asserting that the party’s appeal is national and its vision distinct from that of UDA.
“Some are saying DCP is a party for the Wamunyoro community alone, it’s a tribal political outfit. That is false. You cannot compare DCP with UDA,” he said.

He vowed that once DCP officially launches, UDA will experience an even more significant loss of membership.
“Once we officially launch DCP, no one will remain in UDA,” he declared.
