Matiang’i: Kenya has no money problem, just a leadership crisis

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has said Kenya’s biggest problem is not a lack of funds, but poor leadership and bad management.
Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Thursday, June 19, 2025, after returning from a trip abroad, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary urged Kenyans to focus on electing leaders who can offer real solutions.
Matiang’i, who is being fronted by the Jubilee Party as its 2027 presidential candidate, was welcomed by a crowd of supporters and leaders.
He used the moment to call for unity, accountability, and increased voter participation, especially among young people.
Poor leadership to blame
“Half of our problems have nothing to do with money,” he said. “They have to do with management and leadership. We are better people, we have what it takes to manage this country better.”
Matiang’i criticized those who blame Kenya’s challenges on limited funds, arguing that mismanagement and poor planning are to blame for the country’s struggles.
He urged Kenyans to avoid negativity and stop fighting each other over politics. “Negative energy has no returns,” he said. “Let’s stop blaming one another and start fixing what’s broken.”
Matiang’i also said that both government supporters and those in opposition are suffering, showing that the country’s problems affect everyone equally.
Youth must step up
He ended his speech with a message to the youth, urging them to register and vote.
“We can talk all day, but if we are not registering and preparing to vote, we have not succeeded,” Matiang’i said.

He encouraged young people to take charge of the country’s future by participating fully in the 2027 elections.
As political momentum builds, Matiang’i’s remarks suggest he plans to run on a platform of reform, unity, and responsible leadership, arguing that Kenya needs better leaders, not more money.
