Poghisio commends Gen Z for standing with Albert Ojwang’s family

Former Majority Senate leader Samuel Poghisio has praised Gen Z for rallying behind the family of X influencer Albert Ojwang, whose tragic death in police custody has sparked national outrage.
Speaking during a live interview with a local TV station on Wednesday night, June 11, 2025, Poghisio noted that when Gen Z learnt of Ojwang’s death, they mobilised resources and stood firmly alongside his family, something he believes the government ought to be doing.
He emphasised that the young people demonstrated true compassion, which he feels has been lacking in governance, adding that empathy and civic responsibility are exactly what the government should be embodying.
The former senator added that compassion fosters public trust, arguing that people only place their trust in leaders who demonstrate genuine empathy
“When Gen Zs heard about the death of Albert Ojwang, they rallied resources and stood with the family; that is something the government should be doing,” he praised.
“These young people understand compassion, and we have really lost that in our governance. Compassion is important, and people trust you when you have compassion.”

Poghisio further questioned whether Kenya could genuinely live up to its identity as a democratic nation grounded in the rule of law and urged the country to demonstrate to the world that it is indeed trustworthy
“Can we be what we say we are, a democratic country governed by the rule of law? Can we show the world that Kenya can be trusted?” he asked.
Fundraising drive
Poghisio’s praise comes after comedian Eric Omondi, who doubles up as a humanitarian activist, launched a fundraising campaign to support Ojwang’s family.
Omondi, who joined the grieving family at the Nairobi Funeral Home as they viewed Ojwang’s body on Tuesday evening, June 10, 2025, urged Kenyans to unite and support the grieving family. He emphasised the importance of national unity in the face of injustice.
“How many more must we bury??? #TeamSisikwasisi let’s stand with Baba Albert. Albert left behind a 3-year-old son. Let’s ensure he never lacks anything. May he grow to know that his father died a hero. Send whatever you can to Baba Albert’s number 0727927898. NAME: Meshack Opiyo,” Omondi posted.

Within minutes of sharing the phone number, contributions poured in so quickly that the account reached its limit. Subsequent donations started bouncing back, prompting him to provide an alternative method for sending contributions.
“First and foremost, I want to say thank you for the overwhelming response we have given to Albert’s family through the father; just 11 minutes after I posted that video, Simu ya father imejaa. Anyone who sends anything, God bless you,” Omondi stated.
