Obinna proposes security changes for Gachagua after breach during Karen launch

Renowned media personality and comedian Steve Thompson Maghana, widely known as Oga Obinna, has shared his strong sentiments following the chaotic incident in which unidentified goons attempted to infiltrate an event hosted by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua in Karen on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
In a video shared on his Instagram page hours after the standoff, Obinna stated that the former second-in-command needs to thoroughly scrutinise whether the repeated breaches are a reflection of failure within his security team, saying that it is highly probable, given that this is not the first time goons have stormed his functions.
He then went on to recommend an immediate overhaul of Gachagua’s security team, insisting that if he were in the former DP’s shoes, he would not hesitate for a second to send the entire detail packing.
“Someone please link me up with Riggy G. How is it that every time he plans something, goons show up and disrupt it? That is not normal. That is very suspicious. If it were me, I would have already fired people. That level of security lapse is unacceptable, especially at an event as important as a political party launch,” Obinna said.
He went on to say that such infiltrations pose a grave risk not only to Gachagua but to everyone around him and that there may be a saboteur operating from within.
He expressed that the former deputy president has many admirers, and the fact that the goons who frequently storm his events are often armed with guns means that no one, including Gachagua’s own family, is ever truly safe in such situations.
“You cannot afford to gamble with security at that level. These people are walking in too comfortably. If armed goons can find their way to your political gatherings repeatedly, then there is someone sleeping on the job—or worse, someone aiding them. If I were in his shoes, heads would already be rolling,” he added.

Obinna further expressed interest in hosting Gachagua on his show to delve deeper into the reasons behind the party launch, its timing, and who exactly its members are.
“Riggy G, please come through to my show. Let us talk about this new party. Who are the members? Why now? Kenyans want to understand what this is all about,” he said.
Chaotic launch
The much-discussed chaos erupted moments after the former deputy president concluded the unveiling of his new political vehicle—Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP)—outside the venue in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
Police officers were forced to fire warning shots into the air to disperse an agitated crowd that surged towards the gate shortly after Gachagua and his entourage departed the premises.
A video clip circulating online showed a man, believed to be a police officer, attempting to restore order as crowds jostled at the congested exit.
“Remove the vehicle!” shouted one of the police as vehicles momentarily stalled amid the commotion.
The situation was, however, swiftly brought under control, and no injuries were reported.
Earlier, Gachagua had officially launched the DCP at a colourfully branded headquarters, complete with a neon green and white theme and the slogan Skiza Wakenya (Listen to Kenyans).
Slogan
The party’s logo features a listening ear, symbolic of the party’s rallying call to leaders to genuinely heed the voices of ordinary citizens.

“Today, we finally have a party that belongs to the people. Our party is built on listening. Leaders must deliberately listen, plan around it, and act accordingly,” Gachagua said in his address.
He also named former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala as interim deputy party leader and former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi as national organising secretary.
The launch comes amid shifting political alliances, with Gachagua positioning DCP as a people-centred alternative to what he described as top-down leadership that fails to engage the public meaningfully.
