Manyatta MP denies involvement in June 25 Protests destruction in Embu

The Manyatta Member of Parliament, Gitonga Mukunji, has firmly denied any involvement in the Wednesday, June 25, 2025, demonstrations, distancing himself from claims linking him to the violent unrest and destruction witnessed in parts of Embu County.
Mukunji’s remarks come amid growing political tensions and finger-pointing in the wake of the protests. Several leaders have faced criticism from rival camps, with accusations flying over who may have incited unrest.
The legislator also urged investigative agencies to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for looting and damaging property during the protests.
Speaking in Embu on Friday, June 27, 2025, Mukunji described attempts to link him to the chaos as politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his image.
“I want to categorically state that I had no involvement in the protests. Dragging my name into this vile campaign is malicious and unfounded,” he said.
The demonstrations, which erupted across the country following public outcry, turned violent in some towns. In Embu, several businesses were vandalised and shops looted, prompting leaders and security agencies to initiate investigations.

Pushing for probe
Mukunji has now called on relevant authorities to arrest those responsible for the mayhem.
“The looters must be brought to book. We cannot allow criminals to hide behind protests to destroy people’s livelihoods,” he said.
The MP also called on Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire to present herself to investigative authorities and assist in ongoing investigations. He said her statement could help clarify events surrounding the demonstrations and contribute to restoring calm in the region.
“I urge Governor Cecily Mbarire to record a statement with the authorities. This is not about blame games—it is about accountability and ensuring that the truth comes out,” Mukunji remarked.
The lawmaker defended his track record, emphasising his commitment to peaceful engagement and youth empowerment. He warned against politicising the unrest or using it to settle scores.
“As a leader, I stand for dialogue and development, not destruction. Let us not use this unfortunate incident to create unnecessary divisions,” he stated.
The MP urged young people to seek peaceful means of expressing their concerns, cautioning them against being manipulated by political interests.
“We must guide our youth towards constructive participation in national issues, not violence. Change must come through dialogue and constitutional means,” he said.
Investigations into the protests continue, with law enforcement agencies working to identify those behind the violence and bring them to justice.
