Police crack down on illicit breweries along River Chania

Police from Kangemi Police Post teamed up with the Area Chief of Thunguma Location on June 5, 2025 and seized litres of illicit brew near River Chania.
They found 360 litres of Kangara, a dangerous homemade booze, hidden in thick bushes along the riverbank. No one was nabbed at the scene, but the police poured out the brew and smashed the containers to make sure they couldn’t be used again.
The National Police Service (NPS) said they’re dead serious about wiping out illegal brews across Kenya and asked people to keep tipping them off about anything dodgy.
“The National Police Service (NPS) reiterates its commitment to ongoing efforts to eradicate the menace of illicit brews across the country. We urge the public to continue supporting these initiatives by reporting any suspicious activities in their communities,” their statement read.

Crackdown on drugs in Kenya
The NPS is cracking down hard on drugs and illegal booze, not just in Nyeri but all over Kenya. On 31 May 2025, police in Kibera, Nairobi, seized a massive 2,350 litres of illicit brew -2,000 litres of kangara and 350 litres of chang’aa being sold to locals.
In Kisii, during the same period, a multi-agency team from Magena Police Station and other officials nabbed 1,300 litres of chang’aa and brewing gear from a homestead.
The owner slipped away, but the police are hot on their trail, and the evidence is locked up safely. Meanwhile, in Kwale County, officers from Mackinnon Road Police Station found six sacks of suspected narcotics and 73 cannabis sticks – 40 loose on a bed and 33 wrapped up in a jerrycan.
The NPS isn’t just stopping at illegal brews – they’re also going hard after drug traffickers. On 14 May 2025, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen revealed that police arrested 78 foreign nationals in a massive crackdown on drug trafficking in Marsabit and Isiolo counties.
This was part of Operation Ondoa Jangili, a multi-agency mission to tackle crime in northern Kenya.
