Pathologist Ahmed Kalebi has challenged the National Police Service’s account about the cause of the death of X influencer Albert Ojwang’ while in police custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

In a statement on Sunday, June 8, 2025, Kalebi indicated that pathologists have heard such claims before, matters that have failed to stand the test of medico-legal investigations.

“Hitting one’s head to death while in custody is totally incomprehensible. We have heard such lame defences many times before, and every single time, the medico-legal investigations have confirmed otherwise,” Kalebi stated.

Rushed statement

Kalebi also questioned why police officers would be quick to release a press statement before performing conclusive investigations into Albert’s cause of death.

“Why would the National Police Service even release such a statement instead of waiting for a proper investigation?” he posed.

The circumstances surrounding Albert’s death have been doubted by several notable people, including former Chief Justice David Maraga, who has called for speedy investigations into the matter.

Calls for probe

“The explanation offered by the Director of Corporate Communication for the National Police Service claiming he injured himself in the police cells, by hitting his head on the wall, is wanting and demands immediate and independent investigation,” Maraga said in a statement on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

“Albert’s death is a stark and painful reminder of the dangers faced by Kenyans who express dissent and the deadly consequences when state power goes unchecked.”

The influencer’s father, Meshack Ojwang, has also cast his doubts on the police account of his son’s death. The distraught parent revealed that he had handed over his son to the police in good health and that he was notified of his death upon arriving in Nairobi on Sunday, June 8, 2025, morning.

“I handed over my son to the police officers who had come for him when he was healthy; I am shocked to learn from the police officers at Central Police Station that he banged his head against the cell wall,” Ojwang’ narrated.

He indicated that Albert was first booked at the Mawego Police Station before the officers travelled with him to Nairobi, where he was booked alone in a police cell.

“These statements do not make sense to me absolutely. Even a mad person would stop banging their head against a wall after feeling pain,” Ojwang said.

LSK president Faith Odhiambo equally noted that family members of the deceased were barred from accessing the alleged crime scene, further heightening suspicion over Albert’s death.
